How to find a free online TELC A1 mock exam that matches the real format, what the scoring looks like, and how to prepare for each section before your official sitting.

A free online TELC A1 mock exam is the most direct way to find out whether you are ready for your official sitting. It removes guesswork and gives you a score that maps to the real exam's passing threshold.

The challenge is finding one that actually replicates the TELC A1 format. Most free resources online are either too easy (they are designed to encourage learners, not test exam readiness) or the wrong format (Goethe A1 or generic vocabulary tests).

The Difference Between TELC A1 and Generic A1 Tests

A generic A1 test checks vocabulary knowledge and basic grammar. The TELC A1 exam checks whether you can:

  • Read short authentic texts (notices, messages, schedules) in A1 German
  • Write a short message or note in response to a prompt
  • Listen to and understand short spoken German in everyday situations
  • (Sprechen) Have a brief conversation with an examiner

These are different skills. You can score well on a vocabulary quiz and still struggle with the real TELC A1 format if you have not practised how the questions are structured.

What a Good Free Online A1 Mock Includes

Lesen questions in the right format. A1 reading has multiple choice and true/false question types. The texts are short — a notice, a short message, a schedule. Practice using identical question types.

Schreiben with structured prompts. A1 writing tasks give you explicit prompts: "Write a card to your friend. Tell them your address, invite them to visit, and give them one reason to come." The task specifies what to include. Practice tests should provide the same structure.

Hören that uses real spoken German. The listening section features real conversational German, not slow, scripted learner audio. A useful online mock should use audio at roughly the same speed.

Scoring against the A1 pass mark. A1 requires approximately 60% overall. A good mock shows you your score as a percentage and tells you which sections you passed and which you did not.

How to Score the Schreiben Section Yourself

If a free mock does not provide feedback on your writing, use this checklist:

  1. Required information: List every piece of information the task asked you to include. Check each one off — is it present in your writing?
  2. Clarity: Can someone who does not know what you meant read your text and understand it?
  3. Length: Is it within the guidelines? (Typically 20–40 words at A1)
  4. Register: Did you use the appropriate form (informal for a friend, formal for an office)?

At A1, missing required information is the single biggest source of lost marks. Grammar perfection is not required — communication is.

Preparing for the Sprechen Section

The TELC A1 Sprechen section cannot be fully practised online without a conversation partner. It typically involves:

  • A short self-introduction (name, where you are from, your job, your family)
  • Simple question-and-answer exchanges
  • A brief structured exchange with a partner

Prepare 4–5 sentences on each of: your name and where you are from, where you live, your family, your work or study, and one hobby. Be able to answer simple questions about each.

The examiners are assessing communication, not grammatical perfection. Speak clearly, answer what is asked, and keep going even if you make a mistake.

Using Your Mock Result

After completing a timed mock, note:

  • Your percentage in each section
  • Which questions you got wrong and why (vocabulary gap, question type confusion, or time pressure)
  • Whether Schreiben covered all required points

If you scored above 60% in all sections: you are likely ready. Book the sitting.

If one section is below 50%: spend a week on that section specifically and re-test.

If you are close (55–65% overall): one more week of practice and a second mock before booking.
